AVR: Aortic Valve Replacement – Definition

Your heart has little “doors” that open and close to let blood flow the right way. One of the most important doors is called the aortic valve. It’s the door between the big pumping room of your heart (the left ventricle) and the big tube (the aorta) that sends blood all around your body.

Sometimes this door gets stuck (too stiff) or doesn’t close all the way (too leaky). When that happens, your heart has to work extra hard, and you might feel tired, weak, or sick.

Doctors can fix this by giving you a new door!

  • The new valve can be made of metal (lasts a long time, but you need special medicine to stop clots).
  • Or it can be made from animal tissue (doesn’t last as long, but usually needs less medicine).

Doctors can put in the new valve two ways:

  1. Open-heart surgery (opening the chest).
  2. TAVR – a tiny tube that slips the new valve into place through your blood vessels.

After getting a new valve, blood flows smoothly again, and people usually feel much better. You’ll still need checkups to make sure the new valve keeps working right.
