AMI: Acute Myocardial Infarction – Definition

A heart attack happens when one of the blood tubes that feed your heart gets blocked, so the heart muscle doesn’t get enough oxygen. It’s like when a garden hose gets pinched and the water can’t flow. The blocked part of your heart can start to hurt and die, causing chest pain and shortness of breath. Sometimes the pain spreads to your arm, neck or back.

Doctors treat a heart attack by opening up the blocked tube as fast as they can and giving medicines to thin the blood and ease pain. They might use tiny balloons and metal mesh tubes (stents) to push the blockage aside or do surgery to make a new path for blood to flow. After a heart attack, people need to rest, take medicines, eat healthy, and exercise to help their heart heal and prevent another attack.
