AF: Atrial Fibrillation – Definition

Atrial fibrillation is when the top parts of your heart (the atria) shake instead of beating smoothly. This makes the heartbeat irregular and sometimes very fast, like a drum that can’t keep a steady beat. It can make you feel like your heart is fluttering, or you’re out of breath, tired, or dizzy.

Because the atria are quivering, blood can pool and form clumps that might travel to the brain and cause a stroke. Doctors treat AF by slowing the heart down and trying to get it back to a steady rhythm. They might give you medicines to thin the blood so clots don’t form, or do procedures like a small shock or a catheter ablation to fix the heart’s wiring.
